Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro stopped getting security updates on 13 October 2026, so update to version 25H2. Windows 10 only gets updates if it's enrolled in Extended Security Updates, now available until October 2027.
Why it matters
Cyber Essentials fails any device running software that no longer gets security updates. Two Windows deadlines have just passed, so many small businesses have computers that would fail without anyone noticing.
Windows 11: update to version 25H2
| Version | Home and Pro | Enterprise and Education |
|---|---|---|
| 25H2 | Supported until October 2027 | Supported until October 2028 |
| 24H2 | Ended 13 October 2026 | Supported until October 2027 |
| 23H2 | Ended November 2025 | Supported until November 2026 |
To check your version, open Settings, System, About. To update, go to Settings, Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Computers not managed by an IT provider usually move to 25H2 automatically, but check, because a stalled update can leave a computer unsupported.
Windows 10: only with Extended Security Updates
Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. It only gets security updates if it's enrolled in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme, which has now been extended to October 2027.
- Consumer ESU is for computers signed in with a personal Microsoft account. It's free if you turn on Windows Backup, or costs a one-off fee. Computers managed by a business system, such as Microsoft Entra or device management, can't use it.
- Business ESU is a paid, per-device subscription that doubles in price each year.
- The computer must be on Windows 10 version 22H2 with the latest updates.
For Cyber Essentials, software must be licensed and supported, with a published end date. Tell your certification body about any Windows 10 computers on extended updates, and plan to move them to Windows 11.

- Enrol computers that can't upgrade yet in Extended Security Updates, and budget to replace them.
- Take any computer that can't be updated out of work use.
